In this article, we'll explain how to create some commonly used segments. You can then use segments to send targeted email campaigns to your contacts, such as a special offer for example.
Before you start

- In this article we'll only detail the conditions you can use in Contacts > Segments > Create a segment. Don't forget to click Save Segment and give a name to your segment.
Attributes
Attributes are values attached to a contact. In the context of Segments, there are two types of attributes: Default attributes (attributes already automatically present) and Custom Attributes (attributes that you manually create according to your needs, in the contacts settings).
Default attributes
🔎 Segment by email domain
Situation: You want to target employees of a specific company; let's say that you want to target Sendinblue's employees.
➡️ To target your email campaign to these employees, you can segment your contacts using their email domain. In this case, contacts whose email addresses end with "sendinblue.com".
- Click Add a condition.
- Set the drop-down menus to Their email addresses > ends with > type “sendinblue.com” in the field.
- Click Validate this condition.
🔎 Segment by contact lists
Situation: You want to send a campaign to all your contacts, except contacts from a specific list.
➡️ You can segment your contacts based on the name of the list you want to exclude.
- Click Add a condition.
- Set the drop-down menus to They are in a list > the name of the list is not > Choose your list's name.
- Click Validate Condition.

🔎 Segment by spoken language
Situation: You want to send an email campaign to your French speaking contacts.
➡️ You can segment your contacts based on their language. In this case, you'll create a segment of contacts whose language spoken is French.
- Click Add a condition.
- Set the drop-down menus to LANGUAGE (or any other name you've chosen for this custom attribute) > is exactly > type “French” in the field.
- Click Validate this condition.
🔎 Segment by age
Situation: You want to target an audience of a certain age. In this case, you are interested in sending a promo code to senior clients. You've decided that clients can be considered seniors from 65 years old.
➡️ You can segment your contacts based on their age. In this case, you'll create a segment of contacts whose age is greater than 65.
- Click Add a condition.
- Set the drop-down menus to AGE (or any other name you've chosen for this custom attribute) > is greater than > type “65” in the field.
- Click Validate this condition.
Events
Events correspond to the behavior of your contacts with your Ecommerce, Website or Email campaigns. You can also create custom events.

🔎 Follow up after a purchase
Situation: You want to get feedbacks from your customers on their orders.
➡️ You can segment your contacts based on the last time they made a purchase and then send them a survey. In this case, let's create a segment of contacts who placed an order in the last 7 days.
- Click Add a condition.
- Set the drop-down menus to They have placed an order > at least > 1 time > in the last > 7 > days.
- Click Validate this condition.
🔎 Follow up if no purchase for a long time
Situation: You want clients who didn't purchase for a long time on your website to purchase again by sending them a discount code.
➡️ You can segment your contacts based on their last purchase date and then send them a discount code. In this case, you'll create a segment of contacts who didn't place an order in the last 6 months.
- Click Add a condition.
- Set the drop-down menus to They placed an order > not at all > in the last > 6 > months.
- Click Validate this condition.

🔎 Follow up after a specific webpage visit
Situation: You want to send a coupon to people interested in your new products and so, who often visit your sales page. In this case, you consider that often is at least 3 times.
➡️ You can segment contacts who have visited a specific URL page at least 3 times (in your sales page) to send them your campaign.
- Click Add a condition.
- Set the drop-down menu to They have visited a page > at least > 3 times> over all time.
- Click Specify this condition.
- Select Webpage URL and choose the webpage URL you want.
- Click Validate this condition.
Email events
🔎 Follow up after a campaign
Situation: You've sent an email campaign, and some contacts didn't open it. You want to send a follow-up campaign to the contacts who did receive your campaign but didn't open it.
➡️ You can create a segment of contacts who received your email campaign but did not open it.
- Click Add a condition.
- For the first condition, set the drop-down menus to You sent them an email and they did receive it > An email campaign > at least > 1 time > over all time.
- Click Specify this condition.
- Select Email name and search for your email campaign.
- Click Validate this condition.
- Click These people have/are also.
- For the second condition, set the drop-down menu to They have opened an email > An email campaign > not at all > over all time.
- Click Specify this condition.
- Select Email name and search for your email campaign.
- Click Validate this condition.
🔎Follow up after any link is clicked in a campaign
Situation: You want to send a follow-up email to people who clicked on a link in your last email campaign.
➡️You can create a segment of contacts who clicked on a link in an email.
- Click Add a condition.
- For the first condition, set the drop-down menu to They have clicked on a link in an email > An email campaign > at least > 1 time > over all time.
- Click Specify this condition.
- Click Email name and search for your email campaign.
- Click Validate this condition.
Custom Events
🔎Segment by Plugin activation
Situation: You own a software; to correctly use a significant functionality of your software, your clients must install a plugin between your software and their website. You want to send a campaign to clients who have already activated this plugin.
➡️ You can create a segment of contacts who did the plugin.
- Click Add a condition.
- Set the drop-down menu to "PluginActivated" (or any other name you've chosen for this custom event)> at least > 1 time > over all time.
- Click Validate this condition.
Mix of Attributes and Events
🔎 Segment by birthday and order placement
Situation: You thought of a new strategy to sell your products: you want to send an email campaign with a promo code to your contacts whose birthday is soon and who have already placed an order on your website.
➡️ You can mix attributes and events by segmenting contacts whose birthday is in the next month and who have placed an order at least once.
- Click Add a condition.
- For the first condition, set the drop-down menu to "BIRTHDAY" > is in the next > 1 > month.
- Click Validate this condition.
- Click these people have/are also.
- For the second condition, set the drop-down menu to They have placed an order > at least > 1 time > over all time.
- Click Validate this condition.
