Drag & Drop Editor (New) - Part 2: Layouts vs content blocks

Now that you have gone through the editor overview, we will show you how to use the layout and content blocks to start designing your email.

To start with take a look at our detailed video on how to use the Drag & Drop Editor (New) 🚀. Layouts and content blocks are explained at the beginning of the video!

What is a layout block ?

A layout block is a structural block consisting of one or more columns to which content blocks can be added.

In the example below, the Layout (in blue) contains 4 content blocks (in yellow) in 2 different columns: 2 images and 2 text blocks.Layout_and_blocks.png

You can either create your own layout by drag and dropping the content blocks or use one of our 3 predefined layouts of one, two and three columns:

You can always add, remove or resize columns by clicking the layout block and using the sliders and +/- buttons.

Layout settings

These settings are visible in the left navigation when a layout block is selected. To open the layout settings, just click the layout block and the panel will appear on the right.

  1. Background: You can set the background type, color and even add a background image.
  2. Block Settings: You can change the vertical alignment of the content and the inner spacing of the content blocks in the selected layout block.
  3. Spacing: Use the padding property to adjust the space around the block with the padding and margin options.

To rename your Layout, just click the blue pen icon next to the title:

Layout actions

You can move a layout block vertically. To move a block, hover over the layout block and hold it while you move the it to the desired location. The blue line will show you where the block will be moved to.

There are certain actions available on the bottom-left corner on a layout block when selected:

  1. Duplicate: Once you have chosen all the settings for your block, you can duplicate it. This is a real time saver when it comes to designing your campaign or template.
  2. Show or hide: Hide or show a block by adding conditions. Learn more about conditional display
  3. Repeat block: You can repeat blocks in your receipts or abandoned cart emails, learn more in our article Repeat a block of items in your emails.
  4. Save: Save a block to reuse it again in other campaigns. Your blocks will appear in the tab My Content in the left panel.
  5. Delete: You can delete a layout block using this option.

What is a content block ?

Content blocks are different content types that you can add in your email. You can drag & drop the content blocks into the layout blocks.

The available content blocks are text, image, button, social media, html, divider, header and footer:

Each content block has its own setting that can be customised as needed which will override the default template settings in the Design tab.

Like the layout blocks, you can also move, hide or show, duplicate, save, and delete content blocks.

The extra-actions (link, preview, replace image, etc.) will differ according to the type of block you're editing. Example below with the actions for Image block (in yellow) and a text block (in blue):
